A Soul Haunted by Painting portrays the poignant jouey of Yu-liang, a talented and determined Chinese woman. Beginning from a life of hardship in a small town in early twentieth-century China, Yu-liang steps out of the shadows of a brothel to pursue her artistic dreams. Becoming the second wife of Mr. Pan, she faces numerous challenges and adversities amidst revolutions and historical upheavals. Through her perseverance and passion, Yu-liang embarks on a quest for artistic expression, studying painting and attending art classes at the Shanghai Art Institute. However, her joy is hindered when the institute discontinues teaching nude portraits. Undeterred, she leaves Mr. Pan to pursue art in Paris, where she gaers recognition and success, winning an award for a nude self-portrait. Yet, Yu-liang';s life is fraught with struggles, from the disappointment of not bearing a son to the discovery of her past, leading to her retu to Paris where she ultimately achieves a major exhibition of her work.
